How to Handle a Dental Emergency

May 27, 2019

If you think you’re having a dental emergency, don’t worry. We are experts in how to handle every situation that might happen to your teeth, even if it’s unexpected. If this happens to you, it may cause feelings of stress and panic, so we want to give you a step-by-step guide for what to do.

  1. Don’t Panic
  2. Assess the situation and remain calm! Broken or knocked-out teeth, severe toothaches or mouth pain, dental abscesses and infections, profuse oral bleeding, loose fillings, lost crowns, broken dentures, broken braces, and mouth lacerations are all considered dental emergencies. This means they are issues that need either care immediately or fairly soon.

  3. Call Our Office
  4. If you have a dental emergency, we can help you find a solution! If you notice abnormal changes to your mouth or experience an injury to your teeth, call us at 832-913-5542 for guidance whether we can treat your emergency or if you need to go to an urgent care. Here at Cinco Ranch Smiles & Braces, we are conscious of how often dental emergencies occur. That is why we reserve space in our schedule specifically for this purpose. We will fit you in as soon as possible. If payment is an issue for you, don’t worry. We offer financing options and a special $30 coupon for an emergency exam and X-ray. Don’t put off care, as conditions will most likely worsen. Coming in sooner can save your tooth and your wallet.

  5. General Tips for Specific Emergencies
  6. If you’ve knocked out a tooth but still have it, keep it moist in a glass of milk and get to our office ASAP. Re-implantation must take place within 1 hour after injury! For broken teeth or a lost crown, be very careful while eating. It’s best to stick to soft foods and purees until we see you again. Temporary dental cement can help protect you from any sensitivity. Do not try to repair broken braces by yourself. Protect your cheeks from sharp edges with dental wax. If you have a toothache, try flossing and rinsing your mouth with 1 cup warm water mixed with 1 teaspoon salt.

We are happy to answer any questions you have over the phone. Call us today if you’re not sure whether you have a dental emergency. We will guide you to the solutions and get you seen ASAP!
